Well, the good news is that I survived. D.C. was a whirlwind of touring, but the 8th graders had a blast (at least I think so...except for the few that broke curfew, but that's another story). Anyhow, I've posted a few pictures with captions to give you a bit of a taste of our four-day journey. It was beautiful and HOT (average of 90 degrees each day). And we did our traveling via the Metro--the kids were proud to look so "touristy."
I made iron-on shirts for the principal and myself in order to encourage the kiddos to keep the pace. Otherwise, if we were the back of the pack and then we passed them, we'd collect $1.00 from them. Luckily, most of them kept the pace. I didn't come back any richer than I left (shucks).
My favorite moment of the trip (besides seeing my brother and his wife's baby on the ultrasound) was talking the R&B band at the Washington Monument into playing an "electric slide" for us white folks to dance to. We danced like maniacs--and the band was loving it! We exposed all our white moves, and they sang for a good 7 minutes. We were exhausted at the end, but it was totally worth it. I'm certain that one of my students posted the video online somewhere. Yikes.
It was wonderful to be in the capitol. However, upon arrival in St. Louis, I ran to meet my sorely missed husband, ate a big meal of fajitas, and then took a 2 hour nap. I also discovered that while I was away, we were robbed. The thief only took my laptop computer (which belonged to my school). Thankfully nothing else was touched--only our peace of mind for a while. I just wish the thief could have waited a month...I mean, all my teaching stuff was on the hard drive...maybe he'll return it and we can negotiate. :)
